Mariam describes becoming a mum as a beautiful experience—one that is hard to put into words—but also one that came with significant challenges.
One of the biggest difficulties for her was breastfeeding, followed closely by her baby’s four-month sleep regression. Nights became exhausting and repetitive. Her baby would wake every 45 minutes on the dot, and Mariam found herself caught in a cycle of feeding to sleep, resettling, and starting all over again throughout the night. Over time, the ongoing sleep deprivation began to take its toll. Mariam experienced postnatal depression, made harder by the lack of rest and recovery.
When Mariam reached out to Karitane, she felt listened to and supported. She worked in partnership with experienced child and family health nurses who took the time to understand her situation and guide her through practical, evidence-based strategies. Together, they explored techniques to help resettle her baby and support more settled sleep, with hands-on support and reassurance every step of the way.
The change was significant. Her baby went from waking every 45 minutes to sleeping independently for 12 hours at a time. He is now more settled and more content, getting the sleep he needs to grow and thrive.
With her baby sleeping well, Mariam is now sleeping too. She wakes feeling more rested and energised, with the confidence and capacity to give her son 100 per cent of herself each day.
