Overview
Traveling with children may sometimes feel overwhelming, but it’s also a great opportunity for bonding and creating lasting memories. The key is to plan, be flexible, and consider the unique needs of your children to make the trip enjoyable for everyone.
Tips to help you prepare
- Involve Your Child in Planning: Try and include your children in the process, whether it’s choosing activities, packing, or learning about the destination. This can build excitement and help reduce any anxiety, especially for younger children who might be nervous about a change in routine.
- Short Travel Times and Frequent Breaks: When planning your trip, where possible allow for more stops to take a break, stretch, and offer a toilet break or a snack. Consider where you may stop that includes toilet facilities, change rooms, or food availability. Whether you’re traveling by car, train, or plane, breaks are essential to keep energy levels up and prevent stress. Try and consider the seating arrangements of your children when travelling long distances and where possible travel at times when your child is well rested.
- Pack Smart: Bring plenty of snacks, water, and entertainment like toys or books. Try to avoid toys with many spare pieces as they may get lost, and books that can be wiped clean can often be easier. Having some music, or a playlist of your child’s favourite songs can keep them entertained. Include in your packing a change of clothes, nappies if required, sun protection (like hats and sunscreen), cloth wipes, hand sanitiser, and any comfort items like a favourite toy or blanket. These familiar items may help your child feel secure in new environments.
- Maintain Routines: As much as possible, try to keep to your child’s bedtime and mealtime routines. This l may help them adapt to the holiday, and ensure they get the rest they need to enjoy the trip.
- Plan Fun and Relaxing Activities: Try and include activities that are engaging for children, such as playgrounds, swimming, or local attractions. It is also important to try and build in some downtime for yourself. This balance may help everyone stay refreshed and happy.
