This week as we celebrate World Breastfeeding Week - a global campaign which aims to highlight the huge benefits of breastfeeding, raising awareness and support to improve the health of babies and mothers.

Although support at the individual level is very important, breastfeeding must be considered a public health issue that requires investment at all levels. The concept of 'educate and support' post-pandemic will provide an opportunity to create a warm chain of support for breastfeeding that includes health systems, workplaces and communities at all levels of society.

At Karitane, we are proud to be a ‘best practice’ breastfeeding friendly accredited workplace. We remain committed to supporting breastfeeding across the state and have worked tirelessly to increase our capacity to offer more accessible support for breastfeeding families through our Virtual Breastfeeding Clinic (VBC). To date, this innovative service has supported over 500 families address their breastfeeding challenges and guide them towards their goals.

We are also delighted to promote further inclusive and accessible support, with mums and families from CALD backgrounds now having access to dedicated breasting support in 28 different languages through the HelpMe Feed App, delivered exclusively through our VBC. This addition will provide life-changing outcomes for many culturally diverse families across the state.

None of these amazing outcomes would be possible without our dedicated team. Thank you to our VBC project and service teams for their outstanding work and the support they provide families day in, day out.

First time parent Suzi, speaks of her own positive experience with VBC, with baby Gabrielle feeding every 20 minutes and only falling asleep whilst breastfeeding. "I was feeling like failure, I was feeling really alone but then I reached out to Karitane. The Karitane Nurse was very gentle and supportive and made me feel empowered."
